It’s a Right Mess You’ve Gotten Yourself into Mr. Messi

It was the news that was all over todays' media outlets and the statement that started it all off? 'Latest news: Leo Messi will not continue with FC Barcelona.' Oh, Jesus Christ, shock, horror, unbelievable - quick, where’s the gun - I'll have to do away with myself!!

So the wee Argentinian egocentric has decided to leave the club that has employed him since the age of 13? Yes, folks, the footballer who revels in self-aggrandisement, has decided enough is enough.

Another related statement about the issue said: 'Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).' The fact is Barcelona FC is, as of June this year, $1.288 billion in debt. And I read the other day a news sports report that revealed Barcelona’s wage budget increased to £565 million which is £60 million more compare to Real Madrid. And of course, we have Messi who became the best-paid player in the team with a £1.22 million weekly wage.

So, why not stay? Why leave one of the most successful European football clubs on the planet in the first place? Well, I hear that he was willing to take a drop in wage - oh really - and this after the club paying you millions of Euros over all these years? Look, folks, Lionel Messi has a net worth of over $400 million that makes him the wealthiest football player ever. And at the ripe old age of 33 you'd be forgiven for thinking that maybe it's time to hang up the old boots. But no, he wants to go on.

So here's a wee sneak peek into the so-called private man: he owns a Ferrari F430 Spider, a Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale, and an Audi R8 Spyder, all worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. He is rumoured to have bought the most expensive car ever, a 1957 Ferrari 335 Sport Spider Scaglietti, at auction for $37 million. He lives in a piece of real estate in an old home 16 miles outside Barcelona, in the town of Castelldefels, which has a view of the Catalan mountains and is worth around $5 million. He also owns a one-zero eco house that is designed and custom-built by Luis Garrido and the wee man has spent $2,000,000 just on the renovation of this property. Not bad, eh?

Lionel enjoys travelling by his private jet that includes a kitchen, two bathrooms, and 16 seats that can be folded into beds. The jet is evaluated at $15,000,000. During the summer breaks, Messi travels around with his family on a yacht which can cost $50,000 per week.

So, I have just one final comment to make on all the above. Your country, Argentina, is in dire financial straits. Nearly half of Argentina’s population is living in poverty as the country’s longstanding economic crisis deepens in 2021 with 42% of the population living on the poverty line. So, Lionel, why not leave Spain, sell up - yes your expensive cars - return to Argentina, and use some of your wealth to help the people of your country? Now that would be worth more than any amount of money you could make in the sport of football.
